6. Giovanni Falcone (1939 – 1992)

Italian magistrate who spent most of his professional life trying to overthrow the power of the Mafia. After a long and distinguished career, he was killed by the Corleonesi family in 1992

Awarded with the Italian “Medaglia d’oro al valore civile” (Gold medal for civil valor), together with his friend, also killed by the Mafia earlier on, he was also named as “heroe of the last 60 years” in the November 13, 2006, issue of Time Magazine.
