Historian born in Riposto (Catania), Giarrizzo graduated in Catania in Classic Literature (1949) and Philosophy (1950). Between 1951 and 1954, he became editor of the “Encyclopedia Italia”, then professor of Modern History in 1955. As a fellow of the Rockefeller Foundation, between 1954 and 1957, Giarrizzo conducted research studies in London, Oxford, Leiden and Paris.
University professor since 1964, he taught modern history at the University of Catania and later, from 1968 to 1999 he held the office of Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy promoting the restoration of the Monastery of the Benedictines -humanistic academic center and important cultural center of eastern Sicily
Giarrizzo was also the author of numerous essays on history and contemporary history, national member of the Lincei academy, Steering Committee member Italian Historical Magazine, Director of the Historic Archive for Eastern Sicily, Chairman of the Teatro Stabile (1999-2000) of Catania.
