Italian painter whose best-known works include Flight from Etna (1938–39), Crucifixion (1941) and La Vucciria (1974). Born in Bagheria, nearby Palermo, after living/working in Rome for a while, Guttuso joined the “Partisans” and fought against the Fascist regime during WWII. He also was an opponent of the Mafia and was elected to the Italian Parliament as Senator in 1976.
